If I recall my chemistry correctly from the old days acids and bases combine chemically to make salts, hence, Hydrogen chloride(acid) plus Sodium(base) yields free hydrogen(explosive) and sodium chloride(salt). Or the base could be aluminum, magnesium, or other metal. The more free electrons, the easier to combine chemically.The salt if dissolved in water breaks up to produce electrically charged components(ions). These ions with electrical charges are where the corruption and corrosion involving metals comes from. In the ion state they provide a pathway for electrical charges to travel. Water with table salt(sodium and chloride ions) dissolved in it will conduct electricity. Remove the ions from the water by distilling it, and current will not flow.

Ergo, distilled water is deionized.
