  Yes they are. Does it make much difference I don't think so.
The difference is the disc on the very bottom. For some reason
in the Syncro, VW used an Aluminum thermostat housing and
changed the hole that this disc covers.
 I have run both types of Thermostat with only very miner
change in temperature. The housing maybe the problem.
I would like to change mine and see if there is any
significant difference. This maybe why they run hotter then
the 2 wheelers. Anyone got a good use housing they want to
give up in the name of Vanagon research cheap?
