1. There is no syncro-specific thermostat. Syncros use the same thermostat as non-syncro Vanagons.

2. The coolant temp gauge is designed to be a relative indicator of coolant temperature. As long as your needle stays near the center of the range of the gauge (ie near where the LED is located), you're OK. Anyone who says the needle must be at the top, center, or bottom of the LED is wrong. The gauge, sender, and thermostat simply aren't that accurate. If you change any one of these components, you'll probably get a slightly different reading on the gauge. The gauge should be consistent though. If you see a change in where the needle rides, it's an indication of a potential problem that you should check out.
