Syncro Folks:

I need to know the symptoms/fixes of syncro driveline problems...

My car runs fine in first and 2nd, but, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th, the car lugs and the driveline makes "clang, clang" ringing noises near the transmission.

I crawled under and, as far as I can tell, the U-joints of the driveshaft do not have excessive play. When I grab the driveshaft I can twist it maybe 80' and it clangs. I'm trying to figure out what this means. Seems like a lot of play in both tranny and front viscous coupler.

It's not clear to me that if I removed the shaft and listened, absence of the noise would mean anything. Continued presence of the noise would mean something in the tranny or further back, right?

Any/all advice would be welcome. Most of all, I am scared I need a new tranny. I bought the car for $4500 with 135K miles on it. The heads seep. Although not rusty or significantly dented, the car was incredibly dirty, the front and rear heater cores leaked, etc. I've just put the dash back together. I'm beginning to see this car as my own special lemon.

Please help me love it more or help me ditch it.
