In October 1987 the 281-847-723 Nylon Guide was superseded to 281-847-723A, which is available from VW for $1.10 each.

The older style was used thru the middle of 85 (VIN 25-B-120000), the newer style through the end of production.

This is where it pays to keep "outdated" Parts Supersession Films, something most VW dealers don't do. What probably happened is the parts person looked at the latest Parts Supersession Film (latest I have is 1997) and couldn't find it (It is not listed in that one). After checking a couple of outdated films, I found the supersession in a 1988 dated Parts Supersession Film.

So no, you don't have to spend $60 (actually the latest VW Price Book has them at about $40) for an entire new track with new guides. I replaced my guides on my 80 Vanagon a couple of years ago using the newer part number. Sure was nice to be able to lock the sliding windows after that.
