I believe what you are looking for is an unregulated output terminal from the alternator, and unfortunately the Vanagon alternator does not have this output as the regulator is built in to the alternator. I was looking at an "intelligent charger" that required an unregulated output and was told that I could modify the Vanagon alternator by removing the diodes and making a couple of internal connections. However, this isn't a good solution as it leaves you without a charging system for the main battery (actually no 12V to run the van on either!)
