I apply a heavy coat of car wax beneath my bra several times a year. I have the bra because it came with the bus when I bought it. I don't think I would buy one on my own. They definately protect from chips and nicks. So far there is no apparent damage beneath but I can't yet vouch for the long term impact. I live in one of the rainiest parts of North America. I can't imagine taking the bra off every time it got wet. It would always be off.
