A listee with a Bentley manual can give you the exact psi for your year Vanagon, but it is in the range of 30-35 psi. Still higher than many cars, but not that uncommon in fuel injected cars.

Don't get cold feet about VW parts prices; there are a couple of listees who run reputable and trustworthy parts houses with some special prices for listees. If memory serves me, I bought a fuel pump from the Ron, of the Bus Depot for about $130.
