I fit a Sony CD unit in my 83.5 Vanangon dash with no trouble.
It's the Sony CDX-4160. It may no longer be available, but it a detachable
face CD player. Install depth on this unit is listed in Crutchfield as 6 3/4"


They list the maximum depth that will fit in the Vanagon dash as 6 1/4" which
suggests this unit wouldn't fit.


It did fit. Tight as it were. But it fit. As others have said you just have to
be careful to keep wires on the back of the unit from getting jammed behind
the unit.
