Subject: Re: dragging starter

Is this electrical resistance problem really a Vanagon related problem. I always thought that it was an air-cooled problem. I do have a vested interest though. I had been living in Seattle until last week and while in Seattle I never have had a starting problem. But, each summer when visiting family in southern California the mysterious non-starting when hot problem comes back. Usually after a long, hot freeway run the starter does not respond at all when the key is turned. No click, no turning of the motor, no nothing. It is like the power to the starter motor is totally off. The solution involved gently tapping the starter motor and solenoid with a hammer. Usually after 5-10 taps it will work perfectly. Would the typical Muir relay fix solve this problem? Or is it more likely that the thing is dirty and needs to be rebuilt?

Thanks,

John Brown '84 Westy
