This sounds a lot like a problem I had with my '84 although mine would not only stumble while cruising but would also die at intersections or while trying to cross them. The problem also appeared right after a head-gasket/fuel tank repair. I assumed it was a dirty fuel filter and took it back to the shop who replaced the filter but that didn't solve the problem. I read on the list to check both ground straps, one from the engine compartment wall to the cylinder head, and the other under the car attached to the transmission. The braided strap attached to the cylinder head looked fine but when I tugged on it I could feel it ripping. I cleaned up the connection area and replaced both straps with heavy duty ground cables from my FLAPS and haven't had the problem again (1 yr). -Chris
