Subject: Problems with clutch bleeding
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Hello all,

I recently purchased a master and slave cylinder for my 81 Westy. The van has been sitting for 6 years. Installation went without a hitch. I bled the master cylinder until all the air escaped. My problem is with the slave cylinder. I hooked a piece of rubber tubing to the bleeder valve and carefully put it in a jar with new fluid as most instructions say. I had my son to push the clutch in and I opened the valve....old fluid (milky) came out and the new came through fine. When we would start the sequence again, the clutch could not be depressed until I opened the valve about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Could this be airlock? Also, after I turned the valve off, I could still see fluid and air bubbles draining into the jar. I would think, if the system is airtight, you should see nothing move...unless its still syphoning off? Another thing I noticed is when I depressed the clutch pedal there is not much movement at all in the clutch lever arm and throwout bearing. Approximately how much movement should there be?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

In distress..........

Scott
