There are a few niggling differences between 84 and 85 Vanagon in the engine compartment, chiefly in the ignition area as you have pointed out.

The Bosch 03 010 and 03 212 caps are virtually identical except the the 03 212 has pins in the plug wire sockets, requiring the use of the later (and I feel better because of RF suppression at both ends of the wires) Bosch 09 272 Ignition wires. I use this set up on my 84.

The distributors are different as shown on my ignition.html webpage on my site. They could be interchangeable between 84 and 85, but I would recommend doing it as a complete changeover. The coil and ignition control module's are the same however.

There are a few minor differences in the Throttle Idle and Enrichment Switch arrangement as well. I believe the 85 has the two separate switches used on 83.5-84 as a single unit on the 85.
