Subject: oil cooler seal

Listee's, The oil cooler on my '90 westie is dripping coolant a bit. It looks like where the cooler is joined to the engine is the leak's location. Replacement of the O-ring looks straight forward in Bentley, however there is a recommendation to use a VW sealant that apparently hardens. Has anyone replaced this O-ring and not used the VW sealant? If not what sealant would be a suitable substitute? ( can't do an archives search right now ) Thanks.
