Do not use sealant on the O-ring. It is un-necessary and may get into the engine and cuase problems there (in lifters maybe?)

WHile it is possible to replace the seal it can be trick as access is poor at best. What is also possible is that the large nut that fastens the cooler to the engine has become loose. Remove the filter and see if it is.
