Years ago, I had a similar problem in an 81 air cooled, I chased it for
a long time and did everything you did hunting for the problem. Ended up
to be a bad connection on one of the injectors (where the wire is
connected to the injector itself), the connection had been shoved back
up under the rubber hood cover.  When that was (easily) fixed, it ran
fine again. good luck.
