Electro-Mechanical Volks, I recieved some mail from some volks working on this, but sorry, system crash caused loss of all. The problem: to power the Toyotomi 400 W A/C. To further our discussion I will consider the following pertinent points: 1) If an inverter of say 1500 continuous watts, 3000 surge is utilized, starting the A/C should be no problem, in a post to me someone stated that this unit should pull less than one HP on the alternator at the full 400 watt usage, or 30 amps. Question: On my 82 diesel Westy, will the alternator meet this load -at idle-, I imagine that it might not and begin to drain the batt. 2) What would be the best way to connect the inverter for this use. I know it must go directly to the batt, I am considering a second batt and isolator rig to run the inverter, but am concerned that this configuration would not adequately power the inverter. This inverter, pulling the A/C at full load, especially idling, might the isolator pull the alternator power -completely- away from the second batt to recharge the primary batt first? Questions and more questions. I figure that this inverter would have to be hooked to the primary battery to be able to recieve adequate "juice" to feed the inverter, feeding the A/C all the time. 3) Now if we would only lose 1 HP from the alternator load, (can anyone confirm this), add in a 10% inefficiency throughput in the inverter, then this is acceptable to me and seems considerbly less than a conventional auto A/C compressor pulls (not to mention the fan on full blow additionally!). 4) The inverters normally shut down when input power pulls below 10VDC. How fast would this happen at idle with the A/C on full blow. I'll bet if the battery were isolated and the isolator threw all power to the primary engine battery that this might happen within a few (5 or less) minutes in a fully charged battery at that load. Anyone know? I have questions, anyone have answers? The inverter method has resparked my interest when I was heading for a generator. But questions need to be addressed by someone with charging system/auto electrical knowledge I don't have. Help!!! Convert me to an Inverter!!!!
