Rick 85 Westie Wrote >have a strange scraping/clunking/reverberating noise that occurs >when I go over a driveway bump or dip My 1981 Holdsworth Villa Conversion had a similar problem on the R/H front wheel - a rhythmic squeak squeak squeak that got faster as the van got faster. It was so loud that people would turn to see what the noise was. Raised the front wheel and the squeak disappeared. Lowered the wheel and the squeak returned. After a lot of thought, I pulled over and quickly removed the front wheel trim. The squeak stopped. Turned out to be the tyre (tire) flexing onto the rim of cheap plastic wheel trim. Some silicon lubricant spray cured the squeak. Must get some proper metal VW hub caps if the squeak returns.

Rick, I would go to a large tyre fitter (in the UK we have drive in tyre garages like Quik Fit) and ask them if the know what the problem is - (sounds like a rubber bush on the anti roll bar has worn and you are getting metal on metal you can see a good photograph http://www.frankw.demon.co.pooh.htm ).

Don't get it fixed there unless the price is right. Get a second quote from a VW specialist.
