Subject: Elring Gaskets--Are they "B" Grade

Volks,

I was told today, by a twenty year VW mechanic, that Elring makes "B" grade gaskets and he will not use them in his rebuilds. My local VW dealership says they are one of the best, but they too, will not use them in their rebuilds.

Any thoughts on this?

I recently purchased a head gasket kit from the Bus Depot that are Elring (excellent price $99!). Any concern here?

Do these gaskets cause an earlier failure rate?

This mechanic also told me that part of the reason that these gaskets fail, when they do, is because VW owners don't understand that the coolant needs to be changed every year! He also went on and said that climate has a lot to do with head failure--the extreme cold/heat.

Any thoughts?
