Subject: 84 CA Vanagon Smog questions
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

I just took my 84 CA model in and it failed smog:

2372rpm measured allowable 35 180 hc ppm pass 1.21 1.20 CO% fail 2.3 02 12.9 CO2

idle 923 rpm meas allowable 236 150 ppm hc fail 1.79 1.20 % CO fail 9.2 O2 7.5 CO2

The previous owner had the original O2 sensor in it at 140k, so maybe this burnt out the cat. I inspected the cat, and it is _empty_, just the outer shell remains. Are these emission levels resonable for no cat, but with a new functioning O2 sensor? I want to be sure before I put a new cat in and have it burn out. Also, the best price I found for a cat is 99$ from busdepot.com. Is there anything less out there?

Are the above smog limits correct? I saw someone else with a 90 and the limit was 240ppm hc, I've also seen 250ppm hc. It would not surprise me if the shop I went to used the wrong values. Thanks much in advance.
