I think Bob's interpreation of things is quite correct and reasonable.

One of the points made by various people is that this CD is a volunteer effort and any profit goes to the list. I don't think that this has anything to do with the copyright issue. It simply does not matter. Even if there was no profit (or a loss) or if it all is for a good cause that does not make it OK to use copyrighted material. I cannot blame people for objecting to use their material.

What we are stumbling into is the fact that for professionals copyrights can be their bread and butter. Most of us on the list are not professionally involved with buses so we could not care less. However as a software writer I am well aware if the significance of this issue.

Also many people think that if something has been published once it is then in the public domain. That is just not true. Also the Internet rules (quoted by someone) will most likely have no legal status whatsoever. These rules are long superceded by the facts. Internet is not the network anymore that it was 20 years ago.

I believe the plans to publish the CD have been withdrawn. So we can now put this issue to rest and get on working on the buses (wheather permitting).
