You never know nowadays (I came really close to buying an '81 with a '76 motor). Check the engine number; if it starts with a CV then it is a Vanagon motor, or if it starts with a G it is a Bus motor. If so, have you done your valves? :) It is unlikely that the '72-'74 heater boxes will work regardless (unless your motor is a '72-'74 built up to 2000cc with FI stuff on it) but I would check the engine number to be sure what WILL fit.
