Great to hear a success story. It prompts me to pass on mine, too. I bought my 86 Vanagon GL about 5 weeks ago from a car lot, believe it or not, for a vey low price, knowing it needed massive repairs, including the a/c. With the help of list members, I've overcome the majority of the engine problems, and had programmed about $1,000 into the budget to repair the a/c. Last Friday when I went to the VW dealer in Richardson, TX for a diagnogstic test on the engine, I asked them to look at the a/c and give me a repair estimate. After all was done, they found a leak in a coupling which was corrected by tightening the nut, recharged it with R12 and I was on my way after paying $127.14 for the work. Couldn't believe it. Now I can afford the parts I need for engine/ignition repair. By the way, they also fixed my windshield washer's clogged nozzles at no charge. Draw your own conclusions.
