Volks,
I am going through and replacing all the water hoses on my 82 Diesel
Westy and have decided against paying for VW hoses for those many "T'd"
and otherwise complicated branched out hoses.
I plan on having a friend take brass piping and braze me on some "T's",
lipping them properly and then reconstructing those complicated hoses
from these new brass T's and double T's and then purchasing straight
hose from the local FLAPS and replacing all my hoses with straight
commercially available hoses. Those complicated T'd hoses from VW will
then become a piece of brass piping with straight hoses clamped onto it:
what a (cheap) great idea!
I believe there is a market among us for such an idea, however I have no
time to pursue. If someone would be willing to fab up all the brass or
aluminum T's needed for the various derivatives of the H2O cooled
Vanagons coolant loop hoses, a kit could be sold and the "kit'ee" could
purchase the kit of the T's and then run to the FLAPS, purchase -all
straight hose- and replace every hose on their Vanagon at what I might
expect for around say $100 USD or so instead of the $600 presently from
VW.
Advantages:
1) Entreprenuer: Make some decent money on marketing a relatively simple
set of T's (might commercially available somewhere already)
2) Vanagoneers: Save around $400 to $500 replacing -all- water hoses on
our Vanagons
3) On a trip, a few lengths of the straight radiator hoses of the
various diameters under the rear seat will get you out of any water hose
problem, or a ride to -any- flaps, most anywhere in the world, will get
you your diameter of straight water hose to effect repairs.
4) We love the boys from Brazil, I mean the Blackforest, but for those
insanely complicated hoses, we would no longer have to call the local
dealer and pull from our pension plans to buy those silly hoses
resembling a coronary artery!
Anybody see the advantages? As our vans age, time will come when it's
just flat better to replace all hoses, particularly if your are
travelling in your Vanagon/Westy.
Whoever is interested in taking this on as a business, I will share all
I know to date, absolutely gratis.
