The cost of the PROM is not important in the cost of the product you're buying
here.  The real cost comes in the development and the programming.  Since
those costs are fixed after the product goes to market, they must be divided
up over the total number of units sold.  Given that the Chevy application
might sell 100 times the volume as the Vanagon chip, the $100. Chevy price
starts to look ridiculuos, not the $250. Vanagon price!
