Subject: access to battery ?

I have another question regarding an '87 camper that I saw yesterday. I'm used to it being the case that you slide the passenger seat forward and pull up the hinged cover to access the battery.

On this vanagon that I saw, there were two swivel seats though neither one seemed to swivel. When I pushed the passenger seat forward, I saw a cover over the battery held down by four screws. I couldn't tell if the cover was hinged because I couldn't access the two forward screws holding down this cover. The screws were actually under the seat hardware by about 1 inch. This is not the part of the hardward that slides. Rather, it is the fixed part upon which the seat slides. If I could make the seat swivel, perhaps I could unscrew the two forward screws to see what's going on. But, as I understand it, this shouldn't be necessary to access the battery. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help.

david
