Has anybody out the ever "de-air-conditioned" their westy? My 84 has the factory installed set-up for the westy and quite honestly its a piece of junk that sucks power, takes up space and adds unnecessary weight to the vehicle.

I tried using it when I got the vanagon in 1990 but was unimpressed with the cooling ability and when I turned the thing on while driving it felt as if I had just thrown an anchor out the window. I realize that for many of you on the list who live in areas that are "cool temperature challenged" the air conditioner is very important, but up here near the Canadian border it rarely gets so hot as to be uncomfortable. Its not uncommon to be camping along Lake superior during the summer and have the temps drop to 50 when the wind shifts and comes off the lake. Anyway.... to make a long story short I'm thinking about taking the thing out and trying to replace it with the overhead cabinet from a non air-conditioned westy.

Anybody done this?

Bob 84 westy, "der bus"
