Volks,

I use Prestone phosphate-free antifree (the orange stuff in the silver bottle) and have been quite happy with it; no problems yet >knock on wood< and plan to continue to do so, because of the following considerations:

1. I use city water, which is soft, but may have to come across a situation where I might have to top off with water that is of unknown origin and potentially questionable chemical makeup, i.e. hard water I didn't know was hard, etc.

2. If I were to change my coolant for the first time, and decide to go on the cheap and get the regular day-glo green Prestone with the assumption that I would not mix that with the phosphate-free stuff (everyone says you can't mix the stuff) then I would try to drain the van and swear and curse when I find out that NOT ALL THE STUFF IS GOING TO COME OUT and I'll have to get the expensive stuff anyway! ;(

3. The expensive stuff is guaranteed for a longer period. Perhaps you're paying for the guarantee, but I don't think that Prestone is making a killing off of the orange stuff, because of the position it takes on its web page saying that you might as well get the green stuff (no economic determinism here; otherwise the web page would scare you into buying the orange stuff). You might actually get what you pay for. If someone on this list has filled the system, FROM EMPTY, with green Prestone and had a better time than I with cooling system trouble, I will gladly stand corrected.

In short, I do "feel better" using the phosphate-free coolant due to the set of circumstances that I am in.

My $0.02, Sam P.S. Thanks, Karl, for the posting. == "Punk's not dead (it just sucks right now)"
