Can you put a diesel engine in an '85?

Do any of you know any young college kids in Paris who wouldn't mind
showing an Americaner around for a couple of days?  Do they have
Vanagons in Paris???

PS  I'm talking about France, not Texas...  I'm going to Rome in two
weeks but I fly into Paris, have never been there, and I'm looking for a
friendly guide
