((Chriss--

Go to the library and check out a book on amplifiers, speakers, ohms, and impedance (NO< not, Impotance!). Sounds like the big speakers had a lower impedance that the originals, causing (effectively) a short in the amp. Bone up on some knowledge and you'll save $$$.))

2) If I buy a new radio and try to install it myself (fire extinguisher at the ready), will it come with a wiring harness that matches the one now hanging out of my dashboard?

((Probably not. Crutchfield Catalog sells adaptors, though.))

Thanks for any thoughts shared. I'm not opposed to paying a professional car stereo technician to do the job, but I'd like to give it a try first.

Go with the pros. Stereo installation (In My Humble Opinion) is nothing but a pain in the kiester. Find a reputable outfit in your town. Drop off the tune- free van on the way to work, pick up the merry-melody-mobile on the way home.
