Subject: '81 Westy: from gas to turbo diesel... am I insane?

I just saw Mark Thomas's post and was excited to see that my interest in going diesel might not be so nutty after all. I see that on the best egine swap compilation page I'm aware of (http://www.volkswagen.org/vanagon/engineswap.htm) there's no documentation of a swap to diesel that is feasible in the US. TDI sounds great, but I'm not that wealthy.

I'd be happy to put together a WWW compilation of available TD engines that'll bolt onto the Vanagon via various mortifying bits of hackery, if folks will help out by telling me what's possible and sensible. Of course the easier the better...

Ok. Beginning of list. According to Mark, the Rabbit TD won't fit due to turbo/exhaust issues. Is this an absolute, or has someone found a way around the problem? Are these engines strong enough for the Vanagon?

VW Quantum TD? Has anyone done this swap? How hard are the Quantum TD's to find and how well do they hold up? I have spent the last couple hours searching the web for 'em and it's definitely not easy to find one online. Finally, it's only a 1.6L engine (at least through '85, which is all I've been able to find evidence of so far)... is it adequate for a Westy?

Yet another engine-swap thread... sorry folks!

Gary
