<< been off the road for about 2 and a half years now I would guess. Runs great but seems to be suffering from either a semi clogged fuel filter, water in the gas, or skunky gas (old gas). So I would like to put a clear filter in place of the VW one to check to see if I am getting trash from the gas tank or what. Is there any special filter I should buy or will a Walmart special do the trick? >>

Had a similar problem on a 914 I bought: sat idle for 7 years. Turned out the inside of the fuel tank had rusted/flaked. Let's not go into what it takes to fix that! It took a couple of weeks of driving to figure this out though.

Anyway, I used the COTS (Commercial, Off-The-Shelf) glear glass tube with the ceramic-looking filter. However, I did not REPLACE my usual filter with it, I augmented the usual filter...

To explain: From the factory it was set up: tank, pump, filter, engine, and back to tank. I think this is the same as the vanagon. I set it up tank, clear filter, pump, regular filter, engine, and back to tank..

My thinking was that sucking flakes of trash through the fuel pump was probably not a good idea. When my little glass filter got clogged, (after about a gallon, initially) since it was on the low pressure side of the fuel rail, it was a breeze to clean/replace on the spot.

It was areal joy to have the tank fixed, and ditch this set up though.

gmbulley cary, nc sun's coming up, high of 80 today.
