Sean put together a nice list already. One addition:

Get the kind that has the mechanic's mirror on the other side. It's a few bucks more, but that mirror comes in handy. Looks kinda like a dental mirror, but with the telescoping rod (magnet on the other end), it's great for looking in all kinds of places that my fat head can't go (e.g. the screw hole of the sliding window latch).
