That paste you refer to I was wondering if it is a brass coloured. If so I would suggest that your synchronizer rings may be wearing. Someone on the list posted this some time ago. Needless to say any particles of metal coming out of the transmission is not a good sign.

How is the shifting. Do the gears clunk when changing down.
