My engine was pulled when my vw mechanic did my clutch but this could have been due to other things because I had my clutch and t/o bearing done while all the accident stuff was being done. I think you do have to have the engine dropped to do the clutch though. I'd do the t/o bearing and the piolet bearing while your in there because many list members have said they can go bad.
