Hi, I got a number emails to clarify a little bit more about the proposed list purchase, and what my conversion plans were. Summary: If you're interested in getting a VW 1.9l TD engine to swap into your Vanagon send me an email. (They can also be swapped into the VW cars.) *The VW 1.9l Engine* The 1.9l TD engine is the successor of the 1.6l TD that was sold in the US. It is the same engine that you can find in post '93 Canadian and European VW's. The new engine is pretty much a bolt in replacement for the smaller 1.6 TD. I'm looking to get new automotive engines, although the difference to the industrial isn't that great. These we're never sold by VW in the US so we will be dealing with imported engines from an engine importer. *milage* The 1.9l TD has the same efficiency as the 1.6l engine in converting heat energy from burning the diesel into mechanical work. People on the list with Vanagon diesels report figures between 26 and 29 mpg for the 1.6 powered Vanagons and Westys. With exactly the same driving habits one would expect the same milage with the 1.9TD engine. However, with the more powerful engine, one is likely to use some of that extra power, which of course will drop milage somewhat. Compared to a gasoline engine the VW diesel engine is about 30% more efficient. With a conservative estimate of 100 000 miles engine life that translates into a 1500 gallon fuel savings, or $1500 to $2000 cost saving (with US gas and diesel prices). If you navigate my WWW pages you will find more information. /Martin -- Martin Jagersand email: jag@cs.rochester.edu Computer Science Department University of Rochester Slow down and visit the VW diesel Westy page: WWW: http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/jag/vw ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
