Jordan,
Excelent post. Puts everything in perspective. I wasn't on your list, but
had I been paying attention (I sort of fade in and out depending on the
time of year), I would've been.
You're "surprised" that out of 70 listees who showed interest, no one
would come through with help? Ahhh, you are way too optimistic about human
nature. Ambivielence and apathy are hard to overcome.
Anyway, I have the following questions about all this. Is VWSA the ONLY
source for the Quads? Like I said yesterday, I've seen them in Berlin so
there is the possibility there is a source closer to the US.
Is this new price accurate? It seems much to good to be true. You couldn't
buy the grille alone over here for that price. So I'm a bit skeptical.
I noticed one of the threads went off on a tariff tangent. Do we know for
sure that there IS a tariff, and as far as I know, they don't apply to
private sales of under $200. Why was this a concern? Or is it just bad
info.
As for myself, I'm going to get one whether I have to go get it myself when
I go to SA or by having them ship it to me. I will be more than happy to
join you finding out all the pertinent info. And if you and I are the only
one's serious enough to get one-so be it.
Calling over there is not a big deal, it's 50¢ a minute with MCI
international. But if we had fax numbers, that would go a long way to
easing the communications costs. Now, I have a friend in Johannesburg
(okay, MORE than a friend) who I could easily coax into doing some research
to maybe augment the info sent from Renier. But he seems to be a good
source of info. Between the two of them however, we should have all the
possibilities boxed pretty well.
I see no reason why we couldn't get something sent to us buy the summer
camping season. If two or three of us get the ball rolling, the rest will
follow....like in anything.
I will be of limited help for the next 2 weeks, however. I'm in the
process of my semi-annual migration. I'm moving back to the East. So I
won't be able immerse myself in the project till the middle of May.
But I will be monitoring the list, so keep me posted.
