Subject: CIS Experts: engine does not start (long)

To tell you the whole story to be discussed over the weekend:

I had to do a piston ring swap on the 5 cylinder because there was too much blue smoke during deacceleration. The sealing of the ventshafts were already changed, it helps on this problem, but it didn't solve it completely.

I removed the engine's head including attached intake and exhaust manifold, it was the easiest way. Therefore I had to unplug the injectors which should have been verified later on.

It needed some time to get all the exchange parts and put it back altogether. I checked the crank- and camshaft timing, adjusted the distributor timing. In all, the van sat down for more than three weeks.

As I wrote, I wanted to check the spray pattern of the injectors. I forced the fuel pump to run and opened the fuel pressure regulator by raising the air pressure plate by hand. But there was no fuel coming out of the injectors.

The coldstart injector sprays fuel into the intake manifold. This part works fine, electrical connection to it is OK.

I opened one line to the injectors at the fuel distributor and fuel spilled out. It tells me, that at least some fuel pressure is on that line.

Weeks ago I translated some German user manual about pressure test equipment to English. I would come back to this to test my lines, if the owner wouldn't that far away.

Anyway, does one have some experiences, which device can reduce the fuel pressure at a CIS on a faulty condition?

Fuelpump: The sound is as usual. But the intake hose is a bit small. Fuel tank comes from a Diesel or carburated Vanagon. But before last month there was not problems at all.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: This is the old rusty thing out of the AUDI. I painted it outside, but I do not know what happened inside.

Fuel Filter: This is taken from the AUDI, too, but it is looking very nice and clean. I guess, it was changed a few month before I bought that vehicle.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: The mechanic of the air pressure plate and cylinders moves like they should do.

Warm Up Fuel Pressure Regulator: No idea how to check it without measurement equipment. Electrical connections are checked and they are all fine.

Injectors: They are looking all the same with no dents, scratches or something else.

At a test start, after ten seconds, the engine tries to start. I guess, only on the fuel provided by the cold start injector. But it is not that good to keep the engine running on idle.

That's the point today, I will try to find something on the weekend. It would be fine to get some actions discussed, which should be done if I do not have any success next two days and I have to proceed next week.

Thanks Helmut '80 (no) Vanagaudi
