Subject: Engine Rebuild Questions
Comments: To: Vanagon@vanagon.com

Hello all,

I flushed the cooling system on my 84 Westy the other day, dislodging the piece of rust/crud that was plugging the leak in my head gaskets. I now have a constant drip from the left head gasket. So faced with the high cost for replacing the heads and 150K+ miles on the engine, I am considering replacing the engine with a rebuilt one. I am going to purchase the engine from my local VW guru because he has the best warranty (1 year parts and labor including removal of the engine) and a fair price. My questions are what should be new/rebuilt in the rebuilt engine and how many hours are required for installation of the engine by a VW mechanic? Also what else should I replace while I am at it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Mike D.
