Julio,

Welcome! You've already heard from the pro-2.1L camp; I have some different suggestions.

As with all things, this choice is a bit of a compromise. If you've followed the archive for awhile, you will undoubtedly notice the amount of complaints from Wasserboxer owners about head leakage. In conjunction with the relatively unreliable cooling system, this is a strong argument in favor of getting an '80-'83 aircooled model. However, if you're like me and find a Vanagon with a recently rebuilt, strong Wasserboxer, go for it...and put some sealer in the cooling system for preventative maintenance. Don't buy one with leaky heads. Stay away from the Diesel, too- unless you have driven a splitty once and think you can hang.

There is so much custom cosmetic equipment out there that you can spiff up any model year of Vanagon. Just check out the archives. As there are few out there for sale, in addition to the fact that you need to SHOP, I wouldn't sweat the year. :)

Happy shopping, and best of luck! Sam

P.S. if you do get an aircooled model, stay away from one with a bored or stroked-out engine. However, there are a few mild hi-perf mods that you can do to the Type IV without making it run too hot or frying.

My question to all of you out their is what year vanagon westfalia should I look for? What is better air-cooled or the wasserboxer? What year did VW change to the wasserboxer water cooled engine? and finally what year did VW change from round headlights to the square headlights? Also does anyone have any advice on which years should be avoided? Thanks in advance for any and all your help. > > Julio T. > vancouver B.C. > 63 beetle > 91 Jimmy (to be replaced by Vanagon Westy) > > <HR> <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD>
