Yes Halotron is basically a gas similar to Halon with less negative environmental impact. The disadvantage is that it is very expensive.

By the way there are two types of Halons used in fire extinguishers: Halon 1211 is banned in Canada. Halon 1301 is still available for certain applications.

Another alternative is CO2 extinguishers. They come invarious sizes at a fairly resonable price. CO2 discharges as a very cold gas which replaces oxygen. It settles down because it is heavier than air. Like all gas extingishers it is influenced by wind. CO2 extinguishers have a special conductive rubber nozzle which focuses the gas and prevents static buildup. CO2 extinguishers leave no residue but need to be used with care in enclosed spaces to avoid suffocation of the operator.

Hope this helps.

Björn
