Subject: Syncro Engine PULL Questions

Gettin ready to pull the engine in Pat H's '90 Syncro Westy in a few weeks for heads (as bad as I've ever seen) and I'm wondering from someone who had done it, if there are any pitfalls to the operation to be aware of as compared to a standard 2wd wasserboxer, of which I've done a couple. Particularly as my usual preference is engine and tranny as a unit, is there anything wrong with this on the 4wd. To me looks easy enough, with the mere complexity of skid plates and the extra drive shaft flange. I'm not worried about handling the weight if keeping things as a unit saves alignment exasperation. Now at this time we were not intending on a clutch, but at 110k or so, perhaps it is warranted, if so is it the standard 228mm set (as I figure) or not, and would replacing the disc only and roughing up the flywheel have merit. Any opinions or hints greatly appreciated. As to the removal and install, the head work I'm familiar enough with. Pat purchased rings at Ron's suggestion, but I'm inclined to avoid pulling the jugs as although I don't find it that hard, reinstallation is not worth the trouble if the motor has solid compression IMHO, any opinions there, I do have a nice slide pin puller/installer made and the ole "blue torch" but I'd as soon avoid it. Similarly I have never replaced the under jug O-ring though I noted someones recent suggestion to roll it down the liner and cut off the old, any merit there? Opinions welcome, preferably from people who have been here on a Syncro.

Anyone who want to help discuss it at Carlisle is welcome as well, Pat and I will both be there.
