what i did was to get some of these big-cup holder thingies from K-mart (the kind that have the rubber flap that sticks down into the window) and cut the rubber off, and bolt them to the plastic panel just in front of the gearshift lever.

it's not too big a stretch to reach and it's out of the way. i put two, one on each side (so the gearshift lever doesn't smash into them too much). but you have to be careful on the water-cools ... there are heater pipes in there, so you need to take the panel off to drill the holes. (well, you need to take it off anyway, really, so you can see where you need to put the nuts on the back).

i also put some up at the edge of the dash ... but this required getting some aluminum square tubing and bolting it into the dash metal (under the edge of the padded top) and then bolting the cupholders to the tubing. this was the only way i could keep the cupholders out from under the edge of the padded top (otherwise, the cup would have been tilted out toward the seats too much). i'm not sure i recommend this, although it is very handy for me. and you cannot do it if you want to use the cigarette lighter or have the a/c controls down on the dash (like campers and the 90-91 models).
