This gear ratio should be about right I believe. Mark, Are you sure you want a 4.57 box? Your original trans is a 5.43 I believe, so unless you've swapped to a more powerful engine, or put on really small tires, the 4.57 will make your diesel agonizingly underpowered. I mean even more so. The later models were 4.83's, a bit better match, but still will slow you down. I don't know if you are aware, but a gas trans needs the bell- housing and input shaft from your diesel trans to fit your diesel engine. Larry '83 diesel Westy soon to be GTI Westy
