Bizarrely, far-left is "off", middle is "high", and far-right is "low". Your "low" may be so low it's a second "off", but maybe not - mine looks off in that position, but if I nudge the dial back toward "high" the flame returns (without re-lighting).

By way of explanation, about all I can offer is that this is from the same folks who gave us the ventillation controls for which some are "off" to the left, others are "off" to the right, and the "overhead vents" control is below the "floor vents" control.
