hi, all. not sure if you remember this (FWIW, It's all in the archives, this has been hashed, and re-hashed countless times) i was the one, who over a year ago, started to ~attempt~ to organize a group purchase of these quad round driving light grilles/driving lights that are available on South African Microbuses. i had over 60 listmembers who are interested (still have the list), but was hampered by my South African "contacts" who always seemed to fizzle out, and i lost contact with them, as well as lack of help from any US listmembers to try to organize shipping etc. Lotta people interested, but nobody wanted to help. (save one or two - i didnt forget you)

if you were interested in the S.A. quad round driving light grille, i took your name, and email address down.. scroll down thru the list of people that want this thing, and see if you can find your name..

I'm surprised... out of almost 70 LISTMEMBERS..... who are "supposedly" interested in this... nobody is willing to help me.. i am not going to do this over the phone.. all i need is some help from a few interested listmembers and someone in SA with email access, that is willing to help..

once again, the grilles that i was trying to get a list purchase going for can be pictured at:

or

http://www.vw.co.za/history/1990/bus.gif

and FYI, those rear sliding windows WONT WORK (they're too big) on the german made vans...

SA quad driving lights the following are some old quotes -

the following price quotes were obtained from: Capitol Motors Pretoria, SA

$1=R5 (all prices have been converted from Rand) these are current as of 1/98

"Microbus" badge for the rear hatch = 6 bucks ( not part of the grille thing, but these are cool... ;<)

ok, here it is...

Quad round driving lite grille (plastic grille only)= VWSA part# 225 853 652 A - *6A price = R355 (R355 means 355 Rand)

Hella inner driving lites= VWSA part# BCW 941 782 price= R142 each (need 2)

\X/ emblem for center of grille = 25 bucks ( i didnt think we needes this before, but just to be on the safe side, i asked, since maybe SA grilles have a different emblem mount)

total cost = R639 ( about 130 bucks, plus 25 bucks for the \X/ emblem for the center of the grille, so, almost 160 bucks total actual cost from VWSA )

according to Renier Marias he has gotten a SUBSTANTIALLY lower quote than the above prices which were obtained in January.(<< According to the local VW parts dudes the grill will set you back R282 (US$51) and the lights R126(US$22,91)each, - supposed total parts cost for under 80 US dollars for grille and both lights new from VWSA!!!)

phone and address for VWSA: Phone Number 011 274 229 994 111

Volkswagen South Africia PO 80 Algoa Road 6230 Uitenhage South Africia

these grilles fit ALL years of vanagons, but those of you with '86 up vanagons will need to get some used '80-'85 Vanagon round headlights and metal buckets, and a few inches of wiring, and the plug that plugs into the back of the headlites. these should be easy enough to find at your local junkyard. the only lights that are included in the SA grille setup, are the smaller inner driving lights, and they are mounted INTO THE GRILLE, ITSELF - NOT MOUNTED TO THE VAN for those of you with '80-'85 vans, you just use your existing sealed beam (or whatever you have) hi-Lo beam headlights.

the grille kit should be as follows: (1)South African Microbus plastic quad round driving light grille w/ smaller inner driving light buckets integrated into the plastic grille. (1) \X/ emblem (this may be the same as the larger '88-'91 Vanagon emblem) (2) glass inner driving lights, bulb type, most likely Hella. and the driving light switch (goes in the dummy blockoff located on the right side of your speedo cluster) and assorted fastners (screws, etc).

the driving lights are shallow, so they wont interfere w/ a/c condenser etc. the driving lites are mounted in the grille. the driving lites are NOT the high beams.

hope this clears about a zillion questions up.

chris
