I had the same problem on my 81 vanagon, only both sides. I found that when I would tighten-up on that 10mm nut, that the washer with the square hole in it that was suppose to slide up the shaft didn't as it would seez on the shaft. So I removed the shaft and lightly filed it and the washer so that there wasn't anymore interferance and put it all back together. No Problems since!
