As per usual, there can and will be exceptions to the rule. I have a 90
Fox Wagon GL, 4 speed, optional Pull-Out Stereo, Toyo Tires, Factory A/C,
etc., 60K, purchased from the original owner (and best bud who took
excellent care of it - have all the receipts and mileage logs) last year
and other than basic consumables like oil, filters, plugs, rotor and a cap,
she runs absolutely great. Oops - Rear left wheel bearings went out a few
weeks ago and darn it, had to replace the pads (PBR Metalmasters) and the
front discs for the first time too a few weeks earlier than that. And
someday I've just got to replace those expired rear hatch struts - in the
meantime a broomstick works wonders. Darn Brazilian VW's, they just don't
last do they?......;-)
The 1800 engine installed and the CIS Injection (it's simpler to work on
than you think) has proven it's reliability for years and years in Golfs,
Jettas and Rabbits and it's delivering what I want and lots more too.
Can't complain about the mileage - avg 26 city and 32-35 on the highway
even with the A/C running full tilt (dependent of course on my sometimes
"lead foot"). And it hauls buns down the highway. Looks new inside and
out. And EVERYTHING works (except the aforementioned hatch struts).
A piece of junk? Do I wanna sell it? He** no, I'm having too much fun
driving it everyday (average 55 miles per day). Best 3000 bucks I ever
spent for a "commuter car". And I expect to keep this one for a long time.
