Hi David,
You have many good ideas. I feel balancing makes a big difference and is
sadly not often done on the wasser boxer engine. If I were you I would
consider getting a 2.1L and overhaul it , that way you will have a bit more
to start with. Also you could drive your van during most of the overhaul.
Jim Thompson of Old Volks Home has written quite a lot about this last
year. There should be many cheap 2.1L engines out there as many seem to be
swapping out their wasser boxer engines. I rebuilt my 86 at 227k miles
last fall and like the results so far. I would also install a heavy duty
oil pump, they call this a heavy duty but it really pumps about 20 percent
more volume. The heavy duty pump for the 72-79 beetle will work in our
wasser boxers.
