Subject: Tach Install Complete on 84 Westy

Got the tach installed into my van this weekend. Everything was pretty staightforward as was described in the archives. However, there were a couple of things that I found out by trial and error. First is that there are 2 brown wires on my van but only one coming out of the donor vehicle(84 Wolfsburg). I got the positions reversed in the connector and the tach would go haywire and the instument cluster wouldn't light when switching on the headlights. Figured out that one brown wire grounds the instrument cluster lights and the voltage stabilizer. The other is the ground for the hazzard switch which for some reason isn't present on more recent vans.

The second problem was that my van has a white with red wire that isn't present on the donor van. Doesn't seem to do anything as best I can tell per the wiring diagram in Bentley, but the funny thing is that when I hook up a voltmeter to it with the ignition off, the voltage continues to slowly go up. Anyone know what's up with this? I just taped it off.

Everything seems to work and now I know how hard this little motor works to push this van around(sometimes ignorance is bliss)!

Regards,

Garrick 84 Westy Davis, CA
